Remote Will Registration in DIFC: Is It Possible?

DIFC wills

You are based outside the UAE, or simply cannot take time away to visit a government office in person. You know you need to protect your assets and your family, but wonder whether DIFC will registration requires you to be physically present in Dubai to make it happen.

The answer is no. DIFC wills can be registered entirely remotely, from anywhere in the world, through an official process that carries the same legal standing as an in-person registration.

Here is everything you need to know about how it works, what it costs, and what to prepare.

Yes, You Can Register DIFC Wills Remotely

The DIFC Courts Wills Service Centre introduced the Virtual Registry to allow testators to complete DIFC will registration without visiting Dubai. The process is conducted over a secure video conference, during which the testator signs the will in the presence of a DIFC officer and two independent witnesses, all connected remotely.

This makes DIFC wills accessible to non-resident property owners, overseas investors, and expats who have since relocated but still hold UAE assets. Eligibility is the same whether you register in person or remotely. You must be non-Muslim, at least 21 years old, and hold assets or have family in the UAE. Residency is not required.

How Remote DIFC Will Registration Actually Works

The steps for remote DIFC will registration follow the same structure as an in-person appointment, with the key difference that everything happens over video:

  • Draft your will with a DIFC-registered legal professional: This ensures the document uses the correct language, covers the right assets, and meets all registry requirements before it is submitted.
  • Gather your supporting documents: This includes a valid passport, Emirates ID if you are a UAE resident, details of the assets to be covered, and the full details of your named beneficiaries, executor, and guardians, where applicable.
  • Book your appointment through the DIFC Wills Service Centre’s Virtual Registry portal: Appointment availability varies and can take several working days to several weeks, depending on demand.
  • Attend the video conference at the scheduled time: You and your two independent witnesses sign the will during the call in the presence of the DIFC officer. The witnesses must be present simultaneously, but do not need to be in the same physical location as each other or as you.
  • Pay the registration fee at the point of booking: Once payment is confirmed and the appointment is complete, the will is formally registered and held electronically by the DIFC Courts registry.

What Does DIFC Will Registration Cost?

The cost of the DIFC will be set by the DIFC Courts Wills Service and is payable at the point of appointment booking. As of 2026, the government registry fees are:

  • Single Will: AED 10,000
  • Mirror Wills (two wills registered together for a couple): AED 15,000

These figures cover the government registration fee only. Professional drafting fees are charged separately by the legal firm preparing the document and typically range from AED 3,000 to AED 6,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate.

The DIFC will registration cost at the DIFC does not vary based on whether you register in person or remotely. The Virtual Registry carries the same fee as an in-person appointment.

Which Type of DIFC Will Is Right for You?

Before you register, you need to choose the right will type. DIFC wills are not one-size-fits-all. The DIFC Courts Wills Service offers six types, each designed for a specific asset profile:

  • Full Will: covers all movable and immovable UAE assets, plus guardianship of minor children residing in Dubai or Ras Al Khaimah. Future assets acquired after registration are automatically included.
  • Property Will: covers up to five real estate properties in the UAE.
  • Financial Assets Will: covers up to ten bank or brokerage accounts at UAE branches.
  • Business Owners Will: covers up to five UAE shareholdings.
  • Guardianship Will: covers the appointment of guardians for minor children only.
  • Mirror Will: two separate but complementary wills registered together, typically used by couples who want to leave everything to each other first and then to their children.

Choosing the wrong type is one of the most common mistakes people make when registering their wills in Dubai. A legal professional can assess your full asset profile and recommend the most appropriate structure before you book your appointment.

Register Your DIFC Will From Anywhere in the World

Distance is no longer a barrier to protecting your UAE assets. DIFC wills are as enforceable when registered remotely as they are when registered in person, and the process is straightforward with the right preparation.

Before you book a DIFC will registration appointment, work with a qualified legal professional who can prepare your document correctly, advise on the right will type for your situation, and guide you through the Virtual Registry process from start to finish.
